Our Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) is our summer research experience for undergraduate students interested in pursuing graduate training in the biomedical sciences. Through this summer program, students will:

Enhance their technical and analytical scientific research skills
Develop a relationship with a research mentor
Perform daily research activities
Earn a stipend during the course of the program

Successful applicants will be matched with a participating faculty member according to their research interests. These research mentors are College of Medicine faculty who work in various disciplines, including biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, neuroscience, microbiology, immunology, pharmacology, and physiology. SURF students are expected to work 40 hours per week in their assigned laboratory. Students will meet periodically with their mentors to prepare and review the content of their oral presentations.

The SURF award includes a $3,000 stipend paid directly to the student during the course of the program. Local campus housing will be provided for students not located within the Philadelphia area.

Program requirements:

Student can either be a sophomore or a junior as of Spring 2014
Seniors expected to graduate in 2014 are not eligible. Students must be US citizens or permanent residents.
Must be interested in biomedical research
Must be in good standing at their school
Must submit statement of research interests
Must submit two letters of reference via email directly to biomedresearch@drexelmed.edu. Please put “SURF Program, [name of applicant]” in the subject line.

Selection will be based on the student's academic undergraduate record, research experience, letters of recommendation, statement of research interests, and career goals.

Completed applications must be submitted by Friday, February 28, 2014.
