2016 Science Alliance Leadership Training Institute (SALT)

Application Submission Window: April 15 – May 15, 2016
Institute Dates: August 1–5, 2016
Location: The New York Academy of Sciences, New York, NY

Application materials found through the online link include:

A. Application form.
 
** Please notice that the application form has to be signed by the Principal Investigator (PI), indicating that if selected the graduate student has their consent to participate in the SALT Institute during August 1–5, 2016.

B. Leadership questions essay (400 words)

C. Statement of purpose (500 words)

D. Candidate statement / bio (150 words)

E. Résumé (2 pages)

F. One letter of recommendation
 
** The letter of recommendation should be submitted to sciencealliance@nyas.org by May 15th, 2016 at 11:59 PM (EST). The letter should address the following question: What skills make the candidate a leader?

Application Process

  • Interested students should submit the application at: https://nyas.formstack.com/forms/salt_application_2016 on or before May 15th, 2016 at 11:59 PM (EST).
  • All the required documents (part A–E) should be submitted online. Please notice that the Resume and the application form (A) need to be uploaded into the online portal.
  • The letter of recommendation (part F) should be sent directly by the person who is endorsing the student to:sciencealliance@nyas.org.
  • Only complete applications will be reviewed.
  • The notification of Acceptance/Decline will be sent by e-mail to the applicant by the second week of June.

  • Leadership potential
  • Academic status
  • Excellence in writing

 

Program Overview

The Science Alliance Leadership Training (SALT) Institute is intended for STEM PhD students interested in mastering the skills to advance institutional transformation. This 5-day institute will provide the participants with tools to take ownership of their career by learning interpersonal skills, conflict management and assertive communication skills. SALT will prepare and train graduate students to assume leadership roles through their professional careers.

Overall Program Goals

  • Build essential leadership skills in early career PhD students.
  • Establish and develop a strong and diverse network of STEM leaders with top credentials.
  • Connect STEM graduate students with professional opportunities.

 

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be Members of the New York Academy of Sciences at the time of the application.
  • Applicants must be actively engaged in STEM research as PhD students.
  • Applicants must have completed their second year of their PhD program at the time of the application.

  • Professional Branding Statement
  • Leadership Development Plan
  • Certificate of Participation

 

Curriculum

  • Leadership: effective and assertive communication, negotiation techniques, and encouraging risk-taking attitudes based on constructive criticism.
  • Interpersonal skills: Ethics, integrity, empathy, communication and team-building.
  • Conflict Management and Emotional Intelligence: Conflict resolution, implicit bias and impostor syndrome.
