Discusión General
In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, now 3 weeks ago, >90% of the Puerto Rican archipelago remains without power, ~60% without potable water, and there are entire areas and communities where official relief efforts may not have reached.  Although the surveillance of the public health crisis is poor, there are several reported outbreaks, and cases of leptospirosis.  In terms of food, normal commercial food supply channels have been disrupted, damaged, destroyed, or cannot function because of lack of electricity/potable water. According to Fema officials, there is a food crisis and massive shortage of meals. With the lack of power, the meals likely to be distributed by government relief efforts are typically high in sodium and calories, such as the military ready-to-eat meals: calorie-dense meals that provides the energy from protein, fats, and carbohydrates that are needed to sustain military personnel through combat.

We have partnered with a group of public health students in Puerto Rico  - Salubristas por Puerto Rico. Their mission is to bring necessary donations and education across the archipelago.   We will be crafting sound nutrition messages that they can use in the context of the foods offered during emergency relief.

Our mission is to craft messages that can balance nutrition quality and food safety in these times. We want to do so in a way that can reach anyone, and will be looking at infographics for selected information.

If you are interested in helping in this endeavor in the next couple of weeks, please contact me as soon as you can (Uriyoan Colon Ramos uriyoan@gwu.edu) or Mairyn Lopez Rios (mairyn_lopez@gwmail.gwu.edu). No need to know Spanish.
