We are writing to inform you of a new NIH-supported Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Bronx, NY). The program is designed to provide a year‑long intensive laboratory based research experience to underrepresented minority college graduates who are interested in pursuing training in a research intensive PhD or MD-PhD program but lack sufficient research experience to be competitive in top programs. The training program will have four major components: 1) an intensive, mentored laboratory research experience, 2) a didactic component to increase the trainees’ scientific knowledge and prepare them for interdisciplinary research, 3) a written and oral communications skills enhancement program, and 4) a layered mentoring system to provide the trainees with the support network they need to flourish in the program and beyond. These four components will be interwoven throughout the year long program. Each trainee will prepare an Individual Development Plan (IDP) with the help of their assigned Program Advisor (a senior faculty member) and their chosen research mentor.
Trainees will be integrated into the Einstein community through assigned URM PhD and MD-PhD student peer mentors. Trainees will receive a salary of $27,200 per year plus health insurance and access to subsidized Einstein housing. The program will begin July 1, 2013.
Applicants must be either US citizens or permanent residents to be training grant eligible. They must be either 1) members of groups identified by the NIH as underrepresented in biomedical research, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Alaska Natives, Hawaiian Natives, natives of the US Pacific Islands, or 2) persons with disabilities. Applicants must hold at least a bachelor’s degree in a biomedically relevant science from an accredited U.S. college or university awarded no more than 36 months prior to applying to the Einstein PREP.
