Dr. Ingrid Y. Padilla Cestero, professor of the Department of Civil Engineering and Surveying at the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez Campus (RUM), received recognition for becoming the first researcher from Puerto Rico to be named a GSA Fellow, after being elected as a distinguished colleague of the American Geological Society (GSA), a prestigious entity focused on the advancement of research and discovery in the geosciences.

Padilla Cestero was chosen to join this select group for her research contributions to understanding groundwater flow and contaminant transport in karst aquifers with implications for the protection and remediation of drinking water resources. Also, for her leadership in collaborative interdisciplinary efforts to explore the human health outcomes of exposure to contaminated groundwater, according to Dorothy J. Vesper, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Geology at West Virginia University, an expert in geochemistry and hydrogeology, who nominated the RUM professor for the GSA Fellows.
