Dear colleagues,

On behalf of the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, I am reaching out to notify you that we are seeking applications for the 3rd Annual Dr. Eddie Méndez Scholar Award. This award recognizes outstanding postdoctoral fellows from groups that are underrepresented in science who are conducting research in any discipline related to cancer, infectious diseases, or basic science.

The award was created to recognize Dr. Méndez’s commitment to cancer research and to supporting early-career scientists from underrepresented backgrounds. It recognizes the achievements of post-doctoral fellows from backgrounds that are underrepresented in science based on the NIH definition, which includes individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups (Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders), individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.

A selection committee consisting of Fred Hutch faculty will select at least six awardees. A honorarium and all expenses related to travel to Seattle will be provided.

Awardees will present at a scientific symposium honoring Dr. Eddie Méndez and have the opportunity to meet with Fred Hutch faculty and senior leaders. Our hope is to hold this event in person on the Fred Hutch campus in Seattle sometime between May-October 2021, but given the current uncertainty related to the COVID-19 pandemic we are at this time unable to provide a firm date for the symposium or determine whether the format will be in person or virtual.

Application Deadline: March 1st, 2021

Please share this announcement with any individual or group you think may be interested in this opportunity. More information can be found in the attached Eddie Méndez Scholar Award Fact Sheet, or click here to view application posting. Questions can be directed to Sara Cole scole2@fredhutch.org.
