The Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) awards provide free scientific or language edits of a scientific manuscript or grant proposal from one of our volunteers (a former journal editor, current journal editor, technical writer, or researcher). In 2021, we plan to give 55 JEDI awards (equivalent to >$35,000) to early-stage Principal Investigators (PIs) who (1) are within five years of starting their own academic research group (excluding career breaks, e.g., for parental leave or illness), and (2) have a manuscript or grant in completed draft form ready for editing.

We aim to give JEDI awards monthly to five PIs who face disproportionately high and unfair obstacles to career progression in academic science, including but not limited to women, people from historically underrepresented races or ethnic groups, people from low socioeconomic backgrounds, people with disabilities, primary caregivers, people who identify as LGBTQ+, and people in a low or lower middle-income country.

If interested, please send an email to jedi.award@lifescienceeditors.com (subject: JEDI Award) with one word document comprising (1) your C.V., (2) a short paragraph describing your situation and how you think a JEDI award would help you, and (3) a short summary (<30 lines) of your paper or grant proposal. This information will be kept strictly confidential.

The first deadline is Feb 10, and subsequent award deadlines will be on the 10th of every month. JEDI awardees will represent diverse backgrounds and will have a submission-ready paper or grant proposal that advances knowledge in any area of experimental biology. Our first JEDI awardees will be announced Feb 15 (and subsequently on or around the 15th of every month). If your submission was not chosen, you can reapply for any subsequent deadline. JEDI awardees are selected by LSEF volunteers, including LSEF co-founders Dr. Angela Andersen and Dr. Helen Pickersgill.
