Job Title: Community Education and Outreach Specialist

Reports to: Caribbean Center for Rising Seas Program Director

Location / Hours: San Juan / Full Time one (1) year Contract, amendable as circumstances allow.

The Caribbean Center for Rising Seas (“CCRS”) is a program of the PRSTRT launched in 2021 to develop the knowledge and best practices so that buildings and infrastructure are designed and constructed to be resilient to traditional hurricanes as well as accelerating sea-level rise this century. The plan is for Puerto Rico to be a model for this approach in the Caribbean region and elsewhere.

The Education and Outreach Specialist (EduOS) will help develop and implement educational and public involvement resources and activities to advance CCRS’s outreach and educational efforts, with a specific focus on global warming, climate change and sea level rise. The selected applicant must provide self-initiative and assistance in the implementation of CCRS’s educational and outreach objectives, including the creation of academic, educational, and advocacy materials, as well as the development and coordination of professional and community workshops. The EduOS is responsible for assessing and ensuring the quality delivery of those objectives throughout the various CCRS programs and schedules. The EduOS will be engaged in the development of material directed at the development of various sub-programs.

Through active program evaluation, the Education Specialist will also assess the effectiveness and efficiency of our initiatives and make necessary recommendations to enable their success.

Key Responsibilities: 

Among EduOS’s most important activities for the CCRS Program are:

1. Support the implementation of a community education and outreach plan according to the CCRS goals. 
2. Identify, revise, design, and target key educational objectives following the mission and goals of the CCRS program and each of its projects.
3. Lead, plan, organize, coordinate, and promote, educational and outreach events/activities such as conferences and workshops in support of CCRS’s mission. 
4. Distill, summarize, and depict in a clearly written and graphic manner up-to-date key data/statistics and facts. 
5. Produce, research, update, edit, and/or proofread leaflets, brochures, and other written/graphic, professional-quality, tailored, and informative instructional materials, curricula/ lesson plans/ courses, and stories for school-grade, academic, professional audiences, or the public, regarding sea level rise. Convey the science in a way that engages the target audience and inspires change.
6. Analyze, synthesize, understand, and explain through reports, presentations, and advice on Educational Sectors, current projects, and educational standard updates to support the alignment of project goals with educational strategies.
7. Helps identify project and program strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, particularly as relates to educational aspects. Helps identify educational barriers or obstacles to project and program success.
8. Common tasks include Thorough note-taking, thorough and accurate record-keeping, regularly sharing ideas for continuous improvement, calendar administration/scheduling, coordination, follow-ups, office administration, ordering supplies, and answering requests for information. Perform other related tasks that supervisors might request to manage and in support of overall program strategies. 
9. Focuses on helping educate architects, engineers, surveyors, planners, attorneys, and other professionals to ensure that plans, regulations, and laws take adaptation measures to sea level rise into account.
10. Support the development of an internship program for college students pursuing studies in the professional areas of focus. 
11. Act as liaison, network, and foster relationships with public and private schools, colleges, educators, educational publishers, and other organizations or stakeholders to promote, create, and advance global warming, climate change, and sea level rise education within Puerto Rico’s educational system and ultimately the Caribbean basin.

Qualifications Skills & Job Requirements:

1. Knowledge of tools, techniques, measures, procedures, and methodologies regarding educational practices and perspectives.
2. Experience in virtual meeting software (Zoom, Teams, etc.).
3. Strong planning, organizational, and prioritization skills.
4. Keen attention to detail and commentary from supervisors.
5. Committed to providing excellent customer service when interacting with all kinds of groups.
6. Strong communication, listening, synthesizing, and presentation skills.
7. Impeccable oral and written communications skills in English and Spanish including excellent writing, proofreading, and editing abilities and command of grammar/punctuation, style, and format; ability to communicate, translate, simplify, and articulate complex ideas into easily understood and relatable concepts.
8. Ability to work within a team and provide support to direct supervisors and peers.
9. Ability to perform job responsibilities in a cross-functional team approach.
10. A proficient computer user with strong knowledge of software programs and the Internet.
11. Willingness to acquire, develop, and update additional and current educational and outreach skills.

Experience & Educational Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Science Education or Science Communications from an accredited institution. Other physical science backgrounds (physics, earth, environmental, meteorological, geographical) will be considered. (Education students in the last year of their course of study are welcome to apply if they have full-time availability). A related graduate degree is a plus. 
• Being admitted to practice (licensed) in Puerto Rico, or being in the process of obtaining this certification is strongly encouraged
• The candidate must demonstrate at least 1-year experience in developing/designing curricula, educational materials, or teaching science concepts to a 4th -12th-grade student audience and/or related activities. 
• Experience designing, developing, and implementing outreach programs, internships, or related initiatives.
• Editing experience with an educational publisher is a plus. 

Travel

• Willingness and ability to travel within the jurisdictional limits of Puerto Rico and possibly to the U.S. Virgin Islands and the U.S. mainland, pending public health and safety guidelines.
