The Laboratorio de Astrofísica Extragaláctica do Observatório do Valongo (LASEX/OV) announces openings for at least one post-doctoral position. The postdoc(s) will work on various topics related to the formation and evolution of galaxies, galactic stellar structures, gas kinematics, supermassive black holes, large-scale structure, dark matter, etc.
We encourage candidates to propose their own research projects, as the position includes autonomy to develop and lead their own projects. However, selected candidates will also have the possibility of working in various of the many ongoing projects developed by LASEX/OV -- coordinated by profs. Karín Menéndez-Delmestre and Thiago S. Gonçalves, and also including profs. Marco Grossi and Arianna Cortesi. These projects include (but are not limited to) participation in the CANGA survey, with dozens of observing nights with the SOAR telescope devoted to the investigation of formation histories of nearby southern galaxies and in early science related to the MOSAIC spectrograph for the European Extremely Large Telescope for the study of stellar populations in distant galaxies. We encourage all LASEX/OV members to work together, multiplying the possibilities of co-participation in various projects and participation in national and international collaborations.
The LASEX/OV also has a particular interest in promoting inclusion in science, with special attention to gender, race and sexual orientation.
The monthly stipend will vary according to the experience of the candidate, as different funding sources are at hand. We emphasize that LASEX/OV has funds available for immediate engagement of the selected candidate(s). However, we accept applications to start at any time during the upcoming 2023B semester, subject to negotiation. The position also has financial support for research activities, including travel to conferences, computer equipment, etc.
For more information, questions and/or preliminary discussions about possible research projects, interested parties should contact the LASEX/OV coordinators by email: kmd@astro.ufrj.br and tsg@astro.ufrj.br.
