Dear ASCB Colleague,

Whether you’re looking to establish your academic career or know someone who is, please share the news: The American Society for Cell Biology Minorities Affairs Committee (MAC) is now accepting applications for two different career development programs.

The Faculty Research and Education Development (FRED) Program, funded by the NSF, is a year-long mentoring program to promote grant funding success of junior faculty. Senior postdocs who are about to launch into their own independent positions and untenured junior faculty members who have been in their current positions for five years or less are eligible to apply. The application deadline is March 25, 2016. The program kicks off with a career development workshop for junior faculty and mentors July 14-16, 2016, at the University of North Carolina Rizzo Conference Center in Chapel Hill, NC. Fellows and mentors will also be provided with funds to visit each other's campuses to present a seminar and to attend the ASCB Annual Meeting to participate in a mock grant peer-review session. Click here for more information and to apply to the FRED program.

The MAC is also accepting applications for the ASCB MAC 11th Annual Junior Faculty and Postdoctoral Fellows Career Development Workshop. The workshop will be held July 16-18, 2016, at the University of North Carolina Rizzo Conference Center in Chapel Hill, NC. Applications are due May 6, 2016. The workshop is open to junior faculty and postdoctoral fellows who are interested in academic careers at research-intensive or teaching institutions. A limited number of travel awards are available for members of underrepresented groups in the sciences, members of disadvantaged populations, and faculty (regardless of ethnicity) at minority-serving institutions. The workshop will cover areas including: Professional Conduct, Tenure, Grantsmanship, Mentorship, Leadership, Collaborations, Time Management, Writing, and Lab Setup/Management. Click here for more information and to apply to the career development workshop.

If you have questions about either program, contact Desirée Salazar at dsalazar@ascb.org.
