The University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez Campus (RUM) took an important step in creating the Girls Math Club of Puerto Rico, a dedicated space for girls to explore and develop their potential in mathematics. Led by the Department of Mathematical Sciences, which has hosted the Puerto Rico Mathematical Olympiads (OMPR) for decades, this club not only seeks to motivate girls to participate more actively in this discipline, but also to open doors to science and engineering.
The Club, which began its activities during this semester, is developed in the context of the OMPR, where historically there has been less female participation. This was made known to the radio program Foro Colegial by Dr. Damaris Santana and Dr. Luis Cáceres, coordinators of the initiative. Concerned about this reality, the two professors of the Department of Mathematical Sciences decided to submit a proposal to the Mathematical Association of America, obtaining the Tensor Grant for $6,500.00, a recognition granted to few institutions, even in the United States. They explained that this financial support allowed the Club to come to life, which will offer participants not only mathematical activities, but also the experience of exploring the applications of the discipline in different areas.
