Job Description

USRA is an independent, nonprofit research corporation where the combined efforts of in-house talent and university-based expertise merge to advance space science and technology. USRA works across disciplines including biomedicine, planetary science, astrophysics, and engineering and integrates those competencies into applications ranging from fundamental research to facility management and operations. USRA engages the creativity and authoritative expertise of the research community to develop and deliver sophisticated, forward-looking solutions to Federal agencies and other customers - on schedule and within budget.

USRA is seeking a STEM Workshop Coordinator for our Arecibo, PR location. This position will plan and administer a "Saturday Academy" STEM workshop for 10-20 high school (or other K-12) students and teachers based on space science and/or Arecibo Observatory related topics three times per year. Summer academy may be run as a single workshop rather than a weekly program. Supervise 1-3 student assistants. Prepare materials for additional student and teacher workshops. Other duties as assigned. The Saturday Academy will meet every Saturday for 4-6 hours for 10 weeks, once each semester and in the summer, coordinated with the local school schedule. The incumbent will be expected to be present for the Saturday activities and actively present most of the material.  Translate available NASA workshop materials into Spanish and adapt to the local culture as necessary. This position is currently planned for 0.6 FTE, nominally three days per week.

Required Skills
  • Bachelors of science in physical sciences. Masters degree in space sciences or related field. At least ten years experience administering STEM activities for K-12 students and teachers. At least two years experience designing and preparing student and teacher STEM workshops.
  • Hands-on experience with professional astronomical equipment preferred.
  • Experience in preparation of grant proposals preferred. Excellent speaking and writing ability in English and Spanish.
