This is an academic year, tenure-leading position at the Assistant Professor level. The appointment in the department of Entomology may also include a partial joint appointment with another department such as biochemistry. The incumbent will focus their research program on the molecular biology and physiology of plant responses to arthropod feeding in a systems context and will teach one or more graduate or undergraduate classes. The incumbent is expected to collaborate with other faculty in the Stress Biology Initiative and will have a strong commitment to education and research, excellent communication skills, and the desire and ability to work cooperatively on multi-disciplinary projects.

Research 78% –The successful candidate will contribute to a university-wide initiative in stress biology and a growing focus on understanding the molecular biology and physiology of plant responses to arthropod feeding. The incumbent should be well versed in one or more of: molecular biology, plant physiology, functional genomics, and the analysis of large data sets to investigate the intricate defense system plants employ in response to arthropods. Research responsibilities will include development of a successful research program, with publications in refereed journals, a strong record of extramural grant funding, and supervision of graduate students and post-doctoral research associates.

Teaching 20% – Must be strongly committed to undergraduate and graduate teaching. Specific teaching responsibilities will include a new graduate and/or undergraduate course in an identified area of specialization (e.g, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Insect-Plant Interactions, Life Sciences, etc.) and regular participation in graduate seminars. As a College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) faculty member, the successful candidate is also expected to participate in teaching-related activities outside the classroom. These activities include advising UCARE students, undergraduate recruitment and placement, and advising and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.

Service 2% – Service activities include departmental, university, and professional committee work and/or activities appropriate to the position, such as organized promotion of science literacy to the community.
