Stanford Medicine Postbac Opportunity

Are you about to graduate from college and interested in a career in STEMM? Are you not sure what you want to do but you like STEMM and are curious how to make a career in STEMM? Do you want to go to graduate school or medical school but need to strengthen your application? Are you willing to work hard, to be challenged on a daily basis?  The Racial Equity to Advance a Community of Health (REACH) Postbaccalaureate Program Application Portal will open on January 10, 2024. REACH Postbac, a one-year research program at Stanford University, caters to college graduates aspiring for careers in STEMM. Participants not only engage in impactful research experiences but also receive support to bolster their applications for medical or graduate school. The program provides one year of guaranteed funding, including an annual stipend of $63,500 and a $6,000 signing bonus. Comprehensive health care benefits are included, along with access to Stanford and its research facilities. 

Eligibility

The REACH Program is open to individuals who:

• Hold a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from a four-year college or university before matriculation into the program.
• Are eligible for employment in the US (at minimum, must be able to provide unexpired documentation from page 3 of the Employment Eligibility Verification Form).
• Completed and submitted all requested materials.

Funding Support

Funding level: Funding is guaranteed for one year with the annual stipend of $63,500 and an additional signing bonus of $6,000 (to be distributed on the first paycheck).  Health care benefits can be provided through Cardinal Care Health Insurance.  Access to all Stanford recreational and research facilities are included.

Funding period: One year of funding. Optional second year of funding comes from host lab/research-group.

Application Process and Components

There are two application components (both must be completed to be considered for admission):

1. Stanford employment application
2. REACH SlideRoom application

All letters of recommendation, transcripts, and CVs should be submitted through our SlideRoom portal.

To apply, you will need to:

1. Fill out basic details about your background, educational history, and program eligibility.
2. Write 5 short responses to essay prompts of  1000-3000 characters each:
   1. Describe how your personal identities, values, and/or goals align with this program’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) mission.
   2. Tell us about how your life experiences have shaped your interests and career goals. Where are you coming from and who do you hope to become?
   3. Tell us how specific academic experiences in and outside of your undergraduate education that have prepared you for a career in STEMM.
   4. Describe research that you have been involved in and your particular contributions. And describe a research project that you would like to be involved with, and why.
   5. Tell us why you are interested in REACH specifically and what do you hope to achieve during this postbac research experience.
3. Indicate a set of REACH research mentors who you might be interested in working with from the programs and faculty listed at Departments and Programs page.
4. Provide a resume and a PDF transcript from your academic institution(s). If you have attended multiple institutions, you can provide transcripts from each merged into a single PDF.
5. Provide email addresses for two letters of recommendation from mentors. Your mentors will need to provide their letter by our application deadline (February 10th, 2024). When choosing who should be your recommenders, we suggest academic mentors who know you well, like an academic advisor, research mentor (if you have one), or professor.
