A Holocene bat colony collapse highlights the importance of hot caves in the Caribbean

4 weeks 2 days ago
J Angel Soto-Centeno
Species loss in fragile insular communities can alter the composition and stability of local assemblages. Climate change or anthropogenic pressures are sometimes attributed to the loss of Caribbean bats, but other factors are elusive to document. We studied time-scaled changes in bat assemblage composition from a palaeontological excavation in Cueva Matos, Puerto Rico. Over 800 individual fossils were identified to species, and charcoal was used to develop an AMS ^(14)C chronology. Although...

Challenges oncologists face when caring for hispanics living in puerto rico with colorectal cancer and multiple chronic conditions

4 weeks 2 days ago
Maira A Castañeda-Avila
CONCLUSIONS: Oncologists caring for Hispanic older adults with CRC and MCC encounter complex challenges influenced by unmet social needs and the presence of comorbidities. Tailored approaches, culturally sensitive care, and improved coordination among physicians are vital to enhance the quality of care for this patient population.

Taylor Eisenstein
PROBLEM/CONDITION: An estimated 450,000 enteric illnesses, 5,000 hospitalizations, and 76 deaths associated with animal contact occur each year in the United States. Enteric illnesses are diseases that affect the stomach or intestines and cause symptoms, such as diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting, and are typically transmitted from animals to humans through the fecal-oral route. Humans might encounter animal feces or bodily fluids through contact with the animal itself, the animal's environment, or...

Statistical methods for chemical mixtures: a roadmap for practitioners using simulation studies and a sample data analysis in the PROTECT cohort

4 weeks 2 days ago
Wei Hao
CONCLUSIONS: We develop an integrated R package "CompMix" that provides a platform for mixtures analysis where the practitioners can implement a pipeline that includes several approaches for mixtures analysis. Our study offers guidelines for selecting appropriate statistical methods for addressing specific scientific questions related to mixtures research. We identify critical gaps where new and better methods are needed. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP15305.

A New Phenotypic Expression in a Patient With a Mutation in the CACNA1F Gene

Ricardo A Murati Calderon
Mutations in the CACNA1F gene are associated with various X-linked retinal disorders, including congenital stationary night blindness type 2A (CSNB2A), cone-rod dystrophy (CORDX3), and Åland Island eye disease (AIED), due to their role in calcium channel function in retinal photoreceptor synapses. In this report, we present the case of a 33-year-old Hispanic male patient with childhood-onset nyctalopia and progressive visual loss. Fundus examination revealed optic disc pallor and cupping,...
